World Book Day
Thursday 4th March 2021 marks the 24th year running of World Book Day 📚.
World Book Day was created by UNESCO in April 1995 to initiate a worldwide celebration of books, stories, and reading, and is currently active in over 100 countries!
I’m sure we’ve all been there when, after a tough day, or long week, settling down with a cuppa and a book feels like heaven in a paperback. For some people though, reading a book can substantially change their life for the better.
The message of World Book Day is that reading is great! Read for pleasure, read to transport yourself, and read to educate. For children, spending just 10 minutes a day engrossed, and sharing stories, can make a crucial difference to their future success and prospects – plus it’s fun right?
World Book Day continues to encourage children and young people to read for enjoyment through its work with authors, illustrators, publishers, bookshops, and libraries – and there are some truly wonderful works to choose from. The charity, alongside National Book Tokens Ltd, currently offers a magnificent 15million £1 book tokens to children nationally (one for almost every child, under the age of 18, in the country).
Now, more than ever, this iconic celebration of storytelling is needed in our lives. The ‘National Literacy Trust’ recently found that a substantially smaller number of children read daily in 2021 than they did in 2015, and with a scheme, as irresistible as this, we all need to do our part to ensure this number drops no further. To help, we’ve linked a few fantastic, local, organisations below to give you a head start on ordering your next novel! Don’t say we’re not good to you.
So – on World Book Day 2021, jump online and get ordering the stories you need in your life or purchase them as gifts for those who may need them just a little bit more. This year, the theme is ‘share a story’ and whether that means spending more quality alone time or educating your child or loved ones on the importance of brave new worlds, make sure you settle in for the ride and enjoy wherever your story takes you.
