Work to make a bustling area of Falkirk town centre a safer and more attractive place to live, work, visit and enjoy begins on Monday 17 April 2023. This important and ambitious public realm work will take 30-weeks and will result in significant improvements to the look and feel of the retail and transport hub area around Lint Riggs and Newmarket Street.
This work will be undertaken by McLay Civil Engineering. The firm will have two teams onsite to help ensure timescales are met and disruption to the town centre is kept to a minimum. It will result in kerbs being lowered to provide an open accessible space for all, with surfaces replaced with high-quality natural stone in keeping with the character and heritage of the town centre. The steps between Upper and Lower Newmarket Street will be closed off and one of the bus stops outside the supermarket has already been removed to improve visibility for pedestrians at crossing points. Further enhancements to the environment will see 6 trees planted and the installation of new street lighting and planter seating areas. Although some pedestrian diversions may be needed, every effort will be made to minimise disruption and access to premises will be maintained throughout the duration of the work.
On commencement of the works, the contractor will be making an introduction to all affected businesses and residential properties to provide a point of contact for day-to-day issues. Upper Newmarket Street will be closed (from 17th) as part of the public realm improvement works. Bus services will use temporary stops as follows: • All services from the Asda side of Newmarket Street will be moved to Princes Street (opposite Sportsters) • All services from the church side will be moved to Garrison Place (opposite the Post Office) .All changes to bus services are advertised on affected bus stops and further information will be available from 11 April on McGill’s Buses website www.mcgillsscotlandeast.co.uk and on Falkirk Council’s website www.falkirk.gov.uk/services/roads-parking-transport/transport/planned-service-changes.aspx
