TestTown Falkirk 2015 run by Falkirk Delivers and supported by Carnegie UK Trust is an innovation challenge and the purpose is to encourage aspiring entrepreneurs to take their business idea to market.  TestTown Falkirk 2015 opened in late August. The successful applicants were asked to trial their business idea for one week of trading in the Howgate Centre from the 12th October to the 17th October.  Prior to the trading week the applicants had taken part in a bespoke training package which included a guide to successful retailing, financial, legal structure, health and safety, visual merchandising and buying principles.

The finalists transformed the vacant unit in the Howgate from a blank canvas to ready made pop up shop and showcased their retail concepts over the course of the week. They were given the chance to get a real idea of how it would feel to work in a retail environment.

The judges, who included partners from Falkirk Delivers, the Howgate Centre, CVS, RBS, Real Retail Solutions, Eden Consultancy Group and Falkirk Council Business Gateway, who are all experienced in retail marketing, judged the competition based on unit presentation, marketing, customer service, innovation and business sustainability.

Sarah McKenzie, Falkirk Delivers said “We were delighted with the interest in TestTown Falkirk and thrilled to be one of the ten TestTown projects across the UK and Ireland. All the finalists rose to the challenge to turn their business idea into a reality, and created a fantastic environment for visitors to the town centre. We would like to thank all the finalists for their hard work and dedication.  This project has enabled the finalists a step up and furthermore bringing positive solutions for the town centre. We hope we can replicate this again in vacant units across the town centre.  Thank you to our partners, who have provided fantastic support and input with this project. We would like to congratulate Karen’s Cakes on her success and wish her all the luck in the Grand Final.”

Karen Templeton from Karen’s Cakes said “I am so excited and stunned, I can’t believe it. I have won TestTown Falkirk. I would like to thank everyone for their support and all the visitors to the TestTown unit throughout the week and all who showed their support to all 5 contestants who have taken part in the Test Town Falkirk 2015. Test Town Grand Final, here we come.”
