Falkirk Delivers selected as finalist in nationwide competition

Falkirk group joins line up for Britain in Bloom finals

Environmental charity, Keep Scotland Beautiful is celebrating the success of Beautiful Scotland group, Falkirk Delivers, for being selected as an RHS Britain in Bloom finalist – in recognition of its tireless efforts to deliver environmental improvements in its local area.

Falkirk Delivers will join 75 other groups from across the UK to compete to be selected as the cleanest, greenest and most beautiful place in the UK.

Five Scottish groups were selected as Britain in Bloom finalists, following their success at the Beautiful Scotland Awards in 2017. Beautiful Scotland, which is run by Keep Scotland Beautiful in partnership with the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS), brings communities together to help clean up and beautiful the places that matter to them – and recognises the efforts of volunteers across Scotland as they work to enhance their own community.

Lesley Hendry, Project Lead at Taking a Pride in Falkirk, commented:

“Falkirk Delivers, the towns Business Improvement District is delighted to have been chosen, for the first time, as a UK finalist for this year’s Britain in Bloom. We are responsible for a host of projects under our strategic objective of ‘Taking a Pride in Falkirk, many of which are delivered in partnership with other organisations and volunteers. These projects are designed to ensure that our town centre spaces are bright and beautiful, create a feeling of pride and ensure Falkirk is a welcoming area for those who shop, work, live and visit our town centre.

“We are thrilled to be a Keep Scotland Beautiful Gold award recipient and crowned winner of the BID category in 2017 for the second time. Projects such as our town centre food growing initiative, ‘Dig in Falkirk’ has had a tremendous response from both the businesses and public over the past year, with some being directly involved. We very much look forward to this and our other key projects growing in 2018.”

Further information about all Scottish groups can be accessed here.

Now in its 54th year, the nationwide competition pits rural villages, urban areas and city centres against one another across a range of criteria that includes horticultural know-how, community engagement, efforts to bolster biodiversity and climate change adaptation. All entrants will be scored by a team of RHS national judges in August.

Juliette Camburn, Community Projects Officer at Keep Scotland Beautiful, said:

“We are delighted that Falkirk Delivers has reached the 2018 RHS Britain in Bloom finals. With five Scottish groups reaching this milestone it is another opportunity to celebrate the outstanding achievements of groups across Scotland who all make a significant contribution in helping to improve local environmental quality.

“In partnership with RHS, Keep Scotland Beautiful has supported the work of these groups to bring forward a range of environmental improvements and it is great to see them compete at a UK level. We wish the Scottish finalists the very best of luck.”

The UK winners of each category and of discretionary awards will be announced at an awards ceremony in Belfast on 19 October 2018.
