Behind The Wall host ASIST Suicide Prevention Awareness Workshop

In October 2016, Paul Kenny the Duty Manager at Behind the Wall, working in partnership with Falkirk Delivers was presented with an opportunity to offer ASIST Suicide Prevention training to staff, local businesses and key town centre partners. The training was seen as an opportunity to raise awareness on issues of mental health among young people.

The management at BTW met with Mark Henderson, Senior Communications Manager with Network Rail, at a meeting for Can Do Towns, Scotland.  A main priority for Network Rail is to raise awareness and support local communities in gaining knowledge on suicide prevention initiatives across the country. Behind The Wall were successful in receiving funding to hold the first ASIST Workshop in the area in March 2017.  BTW are at the forefront when it comes to social responsibility and are very much at the heart of the community, and as such are being recognised for their efforts at a National level and are finalists in BBN Scotland National Awards 2017.

The initial ASIST Workshop at BTW, held on the 21st and 22nd March was fully booked in a matter of days and due to the demand for a course such as this, BTW are now looking to run a number of these workshops throughout the year, which will be open to members of the public. Many partner agencies attended this course, such as Police Scotland, Scottish Ambulance Service, and Signpost Recovery as well as employees from town centre businesses. The course was delivered by trained NHS mental health nurses.

Mark Murphy, Scottish Ambulance Service said:

‘Great workshop! Very well done and very useful information delivered in an excellent manner. I would highly recommend the Suicide Prevention Workshop to anyone that is interested in gaining an awareness and understanding of the subject matter. The skills and techniques learned during the 2 days will enable members of the general public to not only recognize the necessary signs but hopefully give them the confidence to make that initial intervention.

Moving forward, can you send me any future dates and I will pass this on to staff as there has been a very positive interest already.’
